Tuesday, June 18, 2002 * the Tuesday Two...
Sitting here thinking ... OK, not a lot going on today. What should I write about. Next thought: need a Friday Five on Tuesday. Thus, the Tuesday Two!
Now what's a good question or two?
Who am I ? and Why am I here? ... too big.
What kind of toothpaste do I use? ... too small.
How about what's my favorite thing to do, outside of writing?
Ok, this will work. Could be a bit boring... but hey, it's my journal. And I may have difficulty coming up with just one favorite thing. I love to take pictures, sketch, water- color, read, garden, and travel... and not necessarily in that order.
As to my favorite, it depends on the moment. Sometimes there's just not a thing in the world I'd rather do than put on some scruffy clothes - usually a pair of coveralls that my daughter left behind and my wellies - and go out and dig in the ground. I've always felt that special something about dirt, letting it run through your fingers, feeling a kind of kinship with the earth. Weird? Yeh, kinda like hugging a tree - but that's how it is.
And some days are meant to be spent cuddled up with a good book... lost in another world... in another time... and in another life. The fact that you can close the book and re-enter at any time is both convenient and pleasant.
Then there are days for sketching and/or water color. But these have been few and far between lately. For me to do this I need a few days completely to myself, no distractions... no interruptions.
Then there's travel. When the mood strikes, I do dearly love this. To spend a few days to a few months in an unknown place, perhaps a place I've read about or dreamed about is always a thrill. Imagining what it would be like to really live there - to be a part of its life and its people.
I'm not a touristy traveler or a 'grockle' as JB calls them... at least I think I'm not. Don't want to stay at fancy hotels and eat at American fast food places. I want to do the "when in Rome thing" - stay in local homes (B&B's most often although it's still not the same), eat where the locals eat, etc. As cliche as it sounds, while I'm there, I want to get a 'feel' for the place. Staying on Hog Island on Muscongas Bay in Maine sharing a cabin in the woods with 16 women was a hoot!
And as for photography, that hobby is kind of innate. The camera is almost a part of me - like an extended body part. I see something that needs to be captured so click! I capture it. Actually sometimes I get it, most times I don't. The 'thing' I saw with my eyes escaped being captured by the camera nine times out of ten. The kids will have a hey day throwing out photos when I'm gone. I can just see them, "Hmmm-mm, what do you think this is?" Luckily with digital, they can now just delete my files.
Well, there's not much time left for the 2nd question... Better make it one that can be answered quickly. How about any other favorite things?
I do like to cook... but I've got to really feel like cooking for it to be a creative calming successful endeavor. Otherwise, it's just preparing food. And I like to fish... and love to walk!
