* Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Had to change the background color to green today... in keeping with the day's celebration... since Grandpa was Irish, from Dublin... and my maiden name carries the traditional O'---.

Wish I had known him.  He was quite the adventurer.  From what I understand, he captained a steamboat for a while, ran a gunboat on the Persian Gulf, fought in the Boer's War, met Winston Churchill, was discharged from the British Calvery over in Capetown, South Africa where he stayed and did some gold mining, then worked as a ranch hand for a while, moved to England, married an English woman (my grandmother whom I also never knew), drove a taxi, and then took the whole family to the States 3 times somewhere in the early 20's, finally staying on the last visit... (think my dad was in his early teens at this time).

This is the info I have accumulated from listening to stories from the family.  I think now  how much I would like to have talked to him and heard the stories from his own lips...

The pictures here are the 2 sides of a postcard Grandpa sent to my dad when he was 6 in England.  At the time Grandpa was traveling back and forth from Turkey to Persia.

I blacked out the family names as that shouldn't be of any importance, but in case you can't read the writing, it says:

April 15, 1913

Dear Son,
Just a snip of a creek in Turkish Arabia.  I have just run a voyage into Turkey and am bound back again to Persia.

Lots of Love From
Daddy

Anyway, thought St. Patrick's day a fitting day to remember him... or rather to honor his memory.

So, slainte Grandpa! ( I think that's the Irish equivalent of  "To your health!")
