Friday, May 3, 2002 * you light up my life...
Something an author said on Oprah the other day struck me as one of those 'truths'... that turn up unexpectantly and are so simple that you wonder why it never hit you before now. It was on her show about the closing of her book club and the author's name I'm ashamed to say has slipped my mind, but her face remains with me... and Oprah's favorite book of hers - "Sula". This may clarify it for you since I'm pretty sure that I'm the only one that has been ignorant of this woman's literary works.
Anyway, what she said and I'm paraphrasing here, is that whenever you enter a room and your child is in it, you must always let your love show on your face and in your eyes... THIS lets a child know that he/she is loved and means the world to you...or something like that. It wasn't the words she used, but the meaning was very clear and I knew as soon as I heard it that this was 'truth'.
I read a poem once that stayed with me... it was about children.
If you touch me soft and gentle If you look at me and smile at me If you let me talk sometimes before you talk I will grow - really grow
Can't remember the author there either, but never forgot the poem. There is truth there too.
Don't know how good a mother I was/am. Since they are all grown and living their own lives, I'd like to think that we didn't do too bad. They were good kids, now they're responsible adults.
We had fun. Life wasn't always easy, but we had fun. That's what I remember. DH and I were only 22 when we became parents, only out of college by a few months. Then 18 months later, we had a second, then a third. Didn't plan it that way, didn't plan it at all. It just happened ... and it was great. Like all parents we were sure our kids were the cutest, smartest, and best kids ever! Still do. We were very lucky... and very blessed.
Financially we struggled like most young couples. Ate a lot of hot dogs and peanut butter over the years. Kids didn't always have name brands or high priced items. I remember DH building this weird electronic box with lights and switches and batteries - and the kids loved it. Pretended it was the cockpit of an airplane I believe. It was probably their favorite toy.
In retrospect, I hope my love showed on my face and in my eyes when I walked into a room where my children were. I hope it still does.
