Tuesday, May 14, 2002 * back from Baton Rouge
Spent this past long weekend in Baton Rouge visiting family. Weather was wonderful. There's something about Louisiana weather that just relaxes me... maybe it's the humidity. It wasn't hot, just warm and breezy...
We sat outside a lot and talked. We ate a lot and talked. I love stuffed artichokes as well as bread pudding with whiskey sauce. These are two things that no matter who makes them, they're always better at home. Of course we also had some crawfish bisque and other native delicacies. Haven't eaten that much or that well in ages.
Sitting out on the back deck I saw some birds that I don't see in my own backyard in Texas. Besides the usual bluejays, cardinals, cowbirds, etc., we saw an Eastern Kingbird, a painted bunting, and pileated woodpecker... not to mention a Giant Blue Heron that landed on the pond beside the house.
Sat outside till late listening to the frogs croak. With the breeze there were no mosquitoes. Did see a huge turtle and a few frogs... drank coffee and enjoyed the lazy contented feeling of being back by the water. Looked for alligators in the lake, but didn't see any.
All in all it was a nice Mother's Day with family and kids and a baby to pass around - as well as tons of food and desserts - and even one dead rattlesnake! (which was shot and the rattle removed and given to one of the kids)
Hope everyone had as nice a few days as we did.
