* resting at home

Taking a rest day here at home after a busy week.  Normally I would be having coffee with a friend on Friday morning but she and her hubby are in New Mexico today.  They love the area around Red River and go at least once a year for a few days.  One day I would like to see it. It does sound beautiful.

Could have gone alone and had my coffee, which I do sometimes, but thought I'd go easy today and stay in my jammies for a bit.  My ideal morning is waking around 6:30 or 7am, laying there a bit talking to the cats, slipping out of bed to do my Yoga, making tea, taking it back to bed or to the computer, and then (if the weather is agreeable) getting out to walk the area.  Now that's a nice peaceful morning.  Doesn't always happen, but the chances are better since I've retired.

My phantom fever returned yesterday evening and I was feeling a bit punk.  Skipped supper, laid on the sofa watching the premieres of the new fall shows, and fell asleep during CSI.

This morning I feel fine.  Have quite a few things I need to do around here.  Once those are done, I would like to redo my 'stories' index - as it is, the list is on the page of one of my essays written in 2000 after my first trip to Maine. I would like to create a new page and separate the essays, opinions, and children's stories - as well as add some of the ones I've never put on the site.

Am also thinking of possibly looking into some self publishing - would like to put my children's stories into a book for the grandkids...  maybe give it to them one Christmas?  Not sure about how to go about this or what it might cost, but plan to check into it.

And then I need to backup my journal files... have been lax about this lately.

Can hear Mama up and about upstairs.  She will be coming down to breakfast soon.  Maybe she might walk with me.  Her knee gives her trouble so she can't walk too far, but generally we can make it around one short block.

The weather is cool out there - really nice.  Guess that North westerner is coming through.  We didn't get any rain from Isidore at all - at least not here by us.

Did talk to family in New Orleans yesterday and they are all fine. Water came up to porch in some instances, but not inside for most.  We're pretty used to Hurricanes down there, grew up with them... so although people board up their houses (can't count the times the schools let us out to go home to help), and prepare... it's more of an attitude of:  "do your worst, we're not leaving!" - thus, the hurricane parties.

I can remember going out to Lake Ponchatrain (we lived about a mile from the lake) to watch the storm surge in over the seawall steps. It amazed me for a lake that was almost always calm to see it flailing about... almost like it was coming alive... and angry.  There were always people out there regardless of the danger.

And driving down to the Gulf Coast - about a 45 minute drive - after a big one had gone through.  Once the whole Coast Highway was buckled and there were all sorts of things in the trees.  And when I was at college at LSU Baton Rouge, we had one that came through and knocked down a good bit of all the old oaks on campus.  I remember wading through almost thigh high water to get to the Union Building after it had passed.

Our family lived close to Lake Ponchatrain and my mother-in-law lived on the Mississippi river road... so it was always exciting (albeit dangerous).  But depending on what part of the country you're from, you're always in Nature's Path - one way or the other.  And for someone who dearly loves Nature, even it's fury is fascinating... to a point.
